Eating Liver To Help You Get Pregnant

Author: Dr. Maryam Mahanian, DTCM, RAc

Before you say… Yuck!… give liver a chance!

Liver is one of the most nutrient-dense foods to help you get pregnant.

Liver is one of the most nutrient-dense foods! It benefits our health in so many ways!

In particular, if you’re wanting to get pregnant or are already expecting, you’ll definitely want to give liver a chance. Here’s why…

Liver Nourishes the Blood

In Chinese medicine, animal protein and especially organ meats, nourish the blood. The blood that I’m talking about is not only the red blood that flows through our blood vessels but rather it is that plus much more.

In Chinese medicine, blood nourishes our skin, muscles, brain and deep organs. It warms, heals, nourishes and moistens. Without blood, we are pale, dry, withered, anxious, weak and lifeless.

In reproduction, adequate blood is even more vital. We need a sufficient amount of blood to nourish our reproductive organs. With blood flow to these reproductive organs, we receive nutrients, oxygen and hormones. After getting pregnant, this blood will be needed to continue to nourish the mommy and her baby.

Blood warms the uterus. A cold uterus isn’t an environment where a baby will thrive. A female who has a “cold uterus” may have trouble conceiving. The effect of cold is constriction. Constriction hinders proper blood flow which causes malnourishment and blockage to the reproductive organs as a result. If you want to know more about “Cold in the Uterus and infertility” and what it can mean to your fertility, you can see my blog post here.

Liver is full of Nutrients

Liver is one of the best sources of high-quality protein. I can’t tell you how important adequate protein is for fertility. Proteins are the building blocks of the body and most women aren’t getting enough protein in their diets.

Liver is nature’s most concentrated source of vitamin A. Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin that plays an important role in reproduction.

Liver is the ultimate B complex containing all B vitamins in abundance, particularly vitamin B12.

Liver contains inositol which is responsible for the healthy maturation of follicles in the ovaries.

Liver is a good source of folate (folic acid). If you suffer from PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), Liver is fantastic. PCOS sufferers tend to have low levels of folate and B Vitamins. Liver is actually one of the best sources of folate that you can fine!

Liver provides our bodies with one of the most usable forms of iron. Most of the women who come to see me are either low in iron or are just borderline. Low iron can result in miscarriage and maternal anemia. If you eat liver every week, your iron levels will thank you! You can most likely cut down on your iron supplements as well.

Liver is an amazing source of choline which is an imperative nutrient for fertility and fetal development.

Liver contains zinc and CoQ10 which enhance fertility and egg quality.

Now you can see why I love liver so much for helping women get pregnant.

Liver is NOT full of toxins so don’t worry!

Yes the liver detoxifies so some may think that liver may be full of toxins. This is not the case. The liver detoxifies but doesn’t actually store toxins. The toxins cleared out by the liver are stored in body fat, tissues and bile of the animal and are excreted.

How Do I Eat Liver?

For those who just simply can’t bring themselves to eat liver, I have heard a good tip is to start by freezing chicken livers and grating them (frozen) into meat sauces during the cooking process. This way it can disguise the distinct flavor. You can also try making a pate and eat it with crackers.

You can also find it in capsule form if all else fails.

To sum up, liver is great for fertility, growth and development, and an excellent food for boosting energy. Sounds great, right?

Wishing you best of luck trying this nutrient powerhouse!
