So many of my patients frequently ask: is it normal to feel super tired after acupuncture? I get this question almost daily, and patients want to know the reasons behind things, so I thought I would shed some light on this in a blog post!
If you’ve had acupuncture, you might have noticed a wave of tiredness or drowsiness that hits you afterward. This is actually a very common experience.
Why does the tiredness happen and is it normal? I’m going to break it down from both a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and a modern scientific perspective.
A Scientific Perspective
Studies on acupuncture show that:
- Acupuncture stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system.
- This is the “rest and digest” system that slows your heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and promotes deep relaxation. Activating this system can naturally make you feel sleepy or drowsy.

- Acupuncture affects neurochemicals.
- Treatment can increase the release of endorphins, serotonin, and GABA, neurotransmitters that reduce pain, calm the nervous system, and improve mood. These chemicals can also promote relaxation and mild fatigue.

- Energy rebalancing takes time.
- While acupuncture gently shifts the body’s energy patterns, your body may temporarily need extra rest to integrate these changes. Fatigue is often a sign that your organs and systems are responding and recalibrating.

Understanding the TCM Perspective
Acupuncture balances the flow of Qi (pronounced “chee”), the life force (or vital energy) that moves through the body along meridians (channels). Qi supports every function in the body, including digestion, circulation, immunity, and mental clarity.
When Qi is blocked, stagnant, or deficient, it can lead to fatigue, pain, or emotional imbalance. The beauty of Acupuncture is that it unblocks and regulates the flow of Qi, which can be a deeply restorative process.
Feeling tired after acupuncture is often your body’s way of integrating this energy shift. Think of it like a gentle reset: your body is releasing tension, redistributing energy, and repairing itself.
Some common patterns I see in my TCM clinical practice include:
- Qi Deficiency: People with low Qi may feel more tired than usual after treatment. This is because the acupuncture is stimulating energy flow, which can temporarily require more rest to allow your body to catch up.
- Blood Deficiency: If blood circulation is sluggish, your body may feel heavy or sleepy as acupuncture improves blood movement and nourishes organs.
- Excess Stress or Liver Qi Stagnation: When stress has accumulated, your body may experience fatigue as acupuncture helps release emotional tension and promote relaxation.
In short, tiredness is usually a positive sign that your body is responding to treatment.
Practical Tips If You Feel Tired After Acupuncture
While post-treatment tiredness is normal, there are ways to make your recovery a bit smoother:
- Hydrate with Warm Water
- Drink plenty of warm water after your acupuncture treatments. There are a few reasons for this. Because acupuncture stimulates the circulation of Qi and blood, we want to drink plenty of water, as water acts as a medium for Qi and nutrients, helping circulate them throughout the body. Acupuncture also releases toxins and metabolic waste from the tissues. Drinking water helps in flushing these toxins out of the system. Proper hydration helps your nervous system, muscles, and connective tissues work optimally so your body can heal more effectively. Lastly, drinking water will help prevent dizziness and light-headedness after your acupuncture treatments.

- Listen to your body.
- Fatigue is your body’s signal to slow down. Gentle stretching, mindful breathing, and just taking it nice and easy after your acupuncture treatments can help. Avoid scheduling heavy workouts, mentally taxing tasks, and anything strenuous immediately after your treatments.

- Eat nourishing foods.
- In TCM, warming, easily digestible foods like congee, soups, stews, bone broth, steamed vegetables, and warm whole grains help replenish Qi and blood after an acupuncture treatment. Cooked warming foods and warm drinks help maintain warmth in the body and proper circulation and Qi flow. Avoid iced drinks and cold raw foods like salads, smoothies, and ice cream, as these cold foods can slow down proper digestion and circulation, causing greater Qi stagnation.

- Track your pattern.
- If tiredness is extreme or persistent beyond 24 – 48 hours, let your TCM practitioner know. Sometimes adjustments in treatment frequency, points, or stimulation technique will be helpful. It is possible that the acupuncture treatment was too strong for what your body is currently capable of processing.
To recap, yes, feeling tired after acupuncture is completely normal, and it’s often a sign that your body is responding to treatment and rebalancing energy. From a TCM perspective, it means Qi and blood are moving, stress is releasing, and your body is starting its healing process. From a scientific perspective, it’s a result of your nervous system and neurochemicals shifting toward relaxation.
Next time you leave an acupuncture session feeling a little sleepy, give yourself permission to rest and embrace the process. Your body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do – healing, restoring, and recharging.
