We’re always so concerned about the female when it comes to fertility but what about treating male fertility? We keep talking about the health of the egg but what about the health of the sperm? After all, it does take two to make a baby!
The Male Factor: 20-50%
Over 20% of infertility cases are due solely to male factor infertility and another 30% is due to both male and female infertility factors.
Up to 50% of failed IVF cycles are due to the male factor.
We’re learning more and more about male factor infertility as time goes on. There seems to be a decline in male fertility but no one is so sure of exactly why. Some reasons could be obesity, smoking, diet, stress and an average older age when wanting to start a family but these are just theories currently.
If you do have any issues with sperm health and/or general health, Chinese medicine offers great solutions for treating male fertility.
Your First Visit
On your first visit, I’ll do a thorough medical history and go over any blood work and semen analysis you have had in the past. After asking a number of questions I’ll come to a Chinese medicine pattern diagnosis. We will talk about treatment options such as acupuncture and/or herbal medicine and also give you diet and supplement recommendations. It’s suggested that you do weekly acupuncture visits.
For optimizing male fertility, I typically suggest treatment for three months and even up to six months realistically, especially if there is an underlying issue with the sperm. The reason for this is because it takes 74 days for sperm to be produced and mature. This is called spermatogenesis.
If the health of the man is optimal during this time, healthy sperm will result. There is so much that a good diet, lifestyle, getting acupuncture and taking Chinese herbs can do during these few months.
Even if according to your test results, your sperm health is adequate, this doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for improvement. Traditional Chinese medicine can help you reach your optimal fertility potential.
Fertility Types According to Chinese medicine
Which fertility type are you? In Chinese medicine, male fertility is broken up into pattern types. Depending on which pattern you fit into most closely, you’ll have different treatment protocols including different acupuncture points administered or different herbs prescribed and even different dietary recommendations. The beauty of Chinese medicine is that the treatments are customized according to the individual and this is what makes the treatments so effective!
For example, if you have been told you have low semen volume, you may be Kidney yin deficient. If you have morphology issues, you may have Qi and blood stagnation. These are things Chinese medicine can fix. See Dr. Maryam for an initial consultation to find out what your Chinese medical pattern is.
