Supporting Women Through Pregnancy and Beyond: The Role of Acupuncture in Pre-Birth Cervical Ripening and Postpartum Care
As a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor, I have had the privilege of supporting women throughout their pregnancies. From preconception, pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care, TCM offers effective and transformative solutions to enhance you and your baby’s well-being during this precious time.
While acupuncture plays an important supportive role throughout the entire pregnancy, it plays a particularly vital role in the third trimester to prepare your body for birth and postpartum.
Cervical Ripening
Throughout your pregnancy, your cervix is closed and firm to hold the baby inside the uterus while the uterus is growing. In the weeks leading up to childbirth, the cervix begins to undergo a process called ripening, where it softens, thins, and begins to dilate in preparation for labor. The cervix ripens to allow the baby to pass through the birth canal.
Acupuncture can be a valuable tool in promoting cervical ripening naturally, helping to prepare the body for a smoother and more efficient labor process. Acupuncture does this by stimulating the production of prostaglandins which are hormones responsible for cervical ripening. Acupuncture also calms stress and anxiety, and promotes relaxation.
Pre-Birth Care
Pre-birth acupuncture is a series of treatments in the weeks leading up to childbirth. It is recommended to begin pre-birth acupuncture at week 35 gestation. Pre-birth treatments use acupuncture protocols associated with the reproductive system, uterine function, and the nervous system to help facilitate the onset of labour and to create a more efficient labor experience when the body is ready. Acupuncture promotes overall well being and balance by simulating energy (Qi) and blood flow, and unblocking the energetic channels of the body.
While regulating hormones, acupuncture can aid in the body’s release of oxytocin which is the hormone responsible for stimulating uterine contractions. By promoting the production of oxytocin and other hormones involved in labour, acupuncture can support the natural progression of childbirth.
Pregnancy can be a time of heightened stress and anxiety for many women, especially when women get closer and closer to their due date. This stress and anxiety can have a negative impact on sleep quality, proper digestion, and adequate energy. It can increase tension and discomfort in the body, and can even be a factor in slowing the onset of labor. Acupuncture treatments can help promote relaxation and reduce stress levels while calming the central nervous system, and creating a more conducive environment for labor to begin.
Postpartum Care
The postpartum period, sometimes referred to as the “fourth trimester,” is a crucial time for women to focus on recovery and healing after childbirth. TCM places great importance and value on the postpartum time for the health of the mother and for the health of her future pregnancies.
Acupuncture addresses physical and emotional needs to promote optimal postpartum health. The treatments expectant mothers receive throughout their pregnancies help to get the body ready and strong for easier postpartum healing and recovery.
- Promoting Healing and Recovery: Acupuncture can help accelerate the body’s healing process after childbirth, reducing inflammation, relieving pain, and promoting tissue repair.
- Balancing Hormones and Emotions: The postpartum period is characterized by significant hormonal fluctuations as your body’s progesterone and estrogen decrease. This can contribute to mood swings, postpartum anxiety, and postpartum depression. Acupuncture treatments can help regulate hormones and provide emotional well-being. This can allow for the much-needed support for women navigating the emotional challenges of new motherhood.
- Enhancing Milk Production: For women who choose to breastfeed, acupuncture can be beneficial in promoting lactation and enhancing milk production. Acupuncture protocols related to breast health and milk flow are administered to support milk supply and help you to nourish your growing baby.
Safety of acupuncture during pregnancy
Acupuncture during pregnancy is extremely safe when administered by a qualified and licensed practitioner. A practitioner that focuses on prenatal care is recommended.
Positioning and Comfort for Treatment
Many new patients wonder where the acupuncture needles are placed on their body for pre-birth visits. The needles are usually placed on the lower legs, wrists and scalp and retained for thirty minutes. Patients are in a comfortable semi-seated position on a massage table in a dimly lit room. It is a very relaxing and pleasant experience.
As a TCM doctor, I am committed to providing compassionate care and personalized treatment plans to support women on their journey to motherhood and beyond.
Yours in Health,
Dr. Maryam
