Online Assessment of Skin Health
What Is Your Skin Type?
Assessment of Skin Health
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) embraces a personalized approach to skin health, recognizing that each individual’s skin concerns are influenced by their unique constitution. Whether it’s through herbal medicine, acupuncture, or diet and lifestyle modifications, the treatments are tailored to target the root causes of your skin conditions. This Skin Health Quiz will help identify your skin type based on TCM principles, allowing us to provide you with customized recommendations to achieve healthy, radiant skin from the inside out.
When it comes to your skin health, recommendations are based on which skin type you fall into. I have narrowed down the skin types into four categories:Â
- Dry Type
- Heat Type
- Blocked Type
- Damp TypeÂ
Dry Type
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the dry pattern is often associated with a pattern of Yin deficiency or Blood deficiency, and sometimes Dryness pathogenic factor. These patterns lead to a lack of moisture and nourishment in the skin and body. Dryness in TCM can affect not only the skin but also the respiratory system, digestive system, and overall body fluids.
Heat Type
The heat type refers to an accumulation of heat that has burned off the body fluids. This pattern usually is associated with other heat signs like redness, irritation, and inflammation of the skin. The heat type can be the result of diet, lifestyle, and emotions.Â
Blocked Type
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the blocked type is a common pattern and is often called Liver Qi stagnation. Blocked or stagnant Liver Qi affects the smooth flow of Qi (energy) throughout the body, and this stagnation often manifests in various physical, emotional, and skin-related symptoms.
The skin, being a reflection of the body’s internal health, shows clear signs of Liver Qi stagnation, especially in terms of the complexion, inflammation, and circulation.
Liver Qi stagnation can result from unfulfilled desires, anger, frustration, environmental toxins, a poor diet, or a sedentary lifestyle. People with liver Qi stagnation feel “stuck” and “blocked” hence the name “blocked type”.Â
Damp Type
The damp skin type refers to a condition where there is an accumulation of dampness in the body. Dampness is a type of sluggish heavy fluid (or waste product) that arises from internal imbalances or environmental conditions, and it can manifest in the skin in various ways. Dampness disrupts the body’s ability to properly circulate fluids and Qi (energy), leading to skin issues like puffiness, swelling, fluid retention, and excessive oil production.
