Premenstrual Acne Type Assessment
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) considers the whole person when it comes to treating all health conditions. This includes acne around the menstrual period. TCM considers the presentation of the acne, skin type, hormonal and digestive health, and even the state of your emotional well being. All of this information leads a TCM practitioner like myself to identify the individual’s pattern of disharmony.
By identifying your pattern of disharmony, we are able to give customized care and individualized health care plans.
Take this assessment to find out your personal acne type and get customized diet and lifestyle recommendations. These recommendations are easy to implement and provide an important step to correcting your hormonal imbalance and clearing your skin.
For premenstrual acne, the patterns of disharmony include Damp-Heat, Blood Stagnation, and Liver Qi Stagnation turning into Heat. Often, you will fall into more than one pattern so this online assessment will give you your top two patterns.
Damp-Heat Type
This type of acne can be severe and is characterized by red and inflamed bumps that are often large and filled with pus. The skin may also feel oily and sticky, and there may be a sensation of heat or burning or itchiness, and there may be whiteheads. This type of acne is believed to be caused by an accumulation of heat and dampness in the body, which can be caused by a diet high in greasy or spicy foods, or exposure to hot and humid weather. Individuals with damp-heat can have a dry mouth, a desire for cold drinks, a thick sticky tongue coating, and a tendency to feel heavy and lethargic.
Blood stagnation Type
This type of acne is characterized by painful bumps that may take a long time to heal and can be dark or purplish in color. The skin may also feel rough and uneven, dull or dark, and there may be a sensation of throbbing or pulsing. This type of acne is believed to be caused by poor circulation or stagnation of blood in the body, which can be caused by a sedentary lifestyle or poor diet. Blood stagnation can show up as having period cramps, dark menstrual blood with clots, and pain in the body.
Liver Qi Stagnation turning to Heat Type
This is the most commonly seen pattern involved in premenstrual acne. This type of acne is characterized by smaller, red bumps that are often clustered together. The skin may also feel oily or greasy, and there may be a sensation of tension or pressure. This type of acne is caused by a stagnation of qi (energy) in the body, which can be caused by stress, unfulfilled desires, emotional tension, or a sedentary lifestyle. Individuals with this pattern can get facial flushing easily when nervous, can feel tension in their body, and can have many other PMS symptoms like breast tenderness, bloating and headaches.
