Today's article is about why pomegranates are super fruits.
My kids and I always look forward to when pomegranates are in season. Although many would agree that cutting and de-seeding them is a bit labor intensive, BUT it’s so worth it. Pomegranates are believed to be native to Iran and northern India but now are found worldwide (although found more in dry climates). They’re known as a symbol of fertility and prosperity.
Pomegranates are considered a “super fruit” because of their high nutritional value and they’re packed full of antioxidants.
Health Benefits of Pomegranate
Here is a little bit of what Traditional Chinese medicine says about the health benefits of Pomegranate…
Sweet, sour and astringent; Neutral in temperature
Yin nourishing properties. The yin of the body is the cooling substance. It nourishes, moistens and enriches the body. Yin also includes the blood which is a vital substance. When yin is deficient, it can’t anchor the yang (yang is warming energy) and as a result the heat rises up to the head causing headaches, restlessness, insomnia, thirst and feeling uncomfortably warm. Some conditions associated with yin deficiency are diabetes, hypoglycemia, chronic inflammatory diseases and anxiety. Pomegranates are excellent at nourishing yin, relieving thirst and other dry symptoms and clearing heat.
Enters the lung and spleen systems and supports immunity
Used for clearing the skin and treating skin conditions like eczema and acne
Destroys parasites in the intestinal tract
Great source of fiber
Strengthens gums, soothes mouth and throat ulcers
In Chinese herbal medicine, the peel of the pomegranate is used to “stabilize and bind” which means to relieve any abnormal discharges like diarrhea, vaginal discharge or heavy sweating or to also correct prolapses like prolapse of the rectum.
Best of all, pomegranates are delicious!
