Hi I’m Dr. Maryam! Here is a little bit about me & how I can support you:
I’m an experienced Acupuncturist & Doctor of Chinese Medicine, a compassionate healer, mom of two and a curious and avid learner.
I love treating women’s health & infertility and supporting expectant mothers throughout their pregnancies & postpartum time. I also focus on acne, eczema, pain management and cosmetic acupuncture facial rejuvenation.
I’ve successfully treated conditions such as PMS, irregular menstrual cycles, menstrual pain, endometriosis, PCOS, infertility, morning sickness, insufficient lactation & postpartum depression, acne, eczema and neck & upper back pain.
I was one of the pioneer practitioners in the greater Vancouver area trained in cosmetic acupuncture facial rejuvenation and have been loving the results it gives my patients for the last twelve years!
I strive to make sure my patients are heard, understood, and genuinely cared for. I treat my patients with compassion along with a high level of knowledge and experience.
In your visit with me, you can expect a soothing comfortable atmosphere, a gentle touch and a friendly welcoming smile.
In 2002 I completed the four-year doctorate program in TCM at the International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Vancouver Canada and a portion of my clinical training in China. I’m licensed with the CTCMA as a Registered Doctor of TCM and a Registered Acupuncturist. Previous to my training in Chinese Medicine, I studied General Biology at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
I am often asked “How did you get into this anyway”?!
I knew I wanted to train in Chinese medicine & acupuncture quite early on in life back when I was 19! I was always interested in health and had already been exposed to acupuncture. I’d been taking my mom to her acupuncture appointments after she suffered from a head injury at work. She had lost all her memory (I know!..crazy story) and the acupuncture was working on her regaining her memory back. I remember sitting there watching the doctor inserting the needles and being in awe and amazement by the whole thing! I actually owe my career to my mom as she one day (out of the blue) suggested I look into learning to become a practitioner myself…and the light bulb went off! Well, the rest is history..I have never looked back and the awe and amazement of this powerful medicine continues every day.
In case you’re curious, my mom did end up regaining her memory after a tumultuous year! – I keep telling her she should write a book about it, seriously!
I’ve had the opportunity to appear as a guest several times on Breakfast Television and CBC Living Vancouver. I’ve been interviewed by Chatelaine Magazine, Alive magazine, local newspapers and I’m a regular contributing author for Medicinal Roots Magazine. I’ve been a qualified examiner with the CTCMA of BC operating and evaluating the practical exams for both doctor of TCM and acupuncturist designations. Previous to becoming a Chinese medicine doctor, I worked as a nutritional consultant advising on diet, nutritional and herbal supplements, and sports nutrition. I’ve also worked at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) in the Cardiovascular and Nuclear Medicine research departments.
As I’m an avid learner, I’m consistently reading and expanding my knowledge and expertise, listening to podcasts, and taking continuing education courses in my field, particularly in the areas of fertility, women’s health, and pregnancy and postpartum care.
I used to own a fast paced clinic in the heart of Kitsilano (Vancouver). When I had my kids (pretty much back to back..they are very close in age), I made the difficult decision of shutting the clinic down so that I could be home with my kids. Almost immediately after that, we moved from our tiny downtown apartment to a house in the beautiful neighborhood of Deep Cove in North Vancouver. There I saw the great opportunity of creating a clinic on the lower floor of the house and that’s where I’m now treating my patients. I’m deeply grateful to be able to do what I love and to be able to do it from my home! It’s a fantastic setup 🙂
When I’m not seeing patients, I try to contribute to the community by teaching moral virtues classes to five & six year olds. The rest of my time is spent trying to keep up with my seven year old daughter and five year old son, cooking good food for my family and enjoying the beauty of our community. My clinical practice, my family, and my spiritual identity, being a member of The Baha’i Faith, keeps my life purposeful and inspired.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has been helping millions of people for thousands of years! I believe it can help you too and I’m excited to share this medicine with you.
With warmth, kindness and compassion,
Please Note: I am no longer at my Kitsilano Vancouver clinic. Since returning from maternity leave, I have opened my private home clinic in the Dollarton-Deep Cove area of North Vancouver, BC. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
