About Dr. Maryam

Hi I’m Dr. Maryam!  Here’s a little bit about me & how I can support you:

I’m an experienced Acupuncturist & Doctor of Chinese Medicine, women’s health expert, a compassionate healer, mom of two and a curious and avid learner.

I help couples conceive and support expectant mothers in their pregnancies & postpartum time.

It doesn’t stop there. I also focus on acne, eczema, pain management and cosmetic acupuncture facial rejuvenation.

I’ve successfully treated conditions such as PMS, irregular menstrual cycles, menstrual pain, endometriosis, PCOS, infertility, morning sickness, insufficient lactation & postpartum depression, acne, eczema and neck & upper back pain.

I was one of the pioneer practitioners in the greater Vancouver area trained in cosmetic acupuncture facial rejuvenation and have been loving the results it gives my patients for the last thirteen years!

I strive to make sure my patients are heard, understood, and genuinely cared for. I treat my patients with compassion along with a high level of knowledge and experience.

In your visit with me, you can expect a soothing comfortable atmosphere, a gentle touch and a friendly welcoming smile.

Past Training & Pursuits

In 2002 I completed the four-year doctorate program in TCM at the International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Vancouver Canada and a portion of my clinical training in mainland China. I’m licensed with the CTCMA as a Registered Doctor of TCM and a Registered Acupuncturist. Previous to my training in Chinese Medicine, I studied General Biology at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

I’ve had the opportunity to appear as a guest several times on Breakfast Television and CBC Living Vancouver. I’ve been interviewed by Chatelaine Magazine, Alive magazine and local newspapers.

I’m a regular contributing author for Medicinal Roots Magazine.

I’ve been a qualified examiner with the CTCMA of BC operating and evaluating the practical exams for both doctor of TCM and acupuncturist designations.

Previous to becoming a Chinese medicine doctor, I worked as a nutritional consultant advising on diet, nutritional and herbal supplements, and sports nutrition and also assisted in research studies at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) in the Cardiovascular and Nuclear Medicine research departments.

I’m often asked “How on earth did you get into Chinese medicine anyway”?!

I knew I wanted to train in Chinese medicine & acupuncture quite early on back when I was 19! I was always interested in health and had already been exposed to acupuncture. I’d been taking my mom to her acupuncture appointments after she suffered from a head injury at work. She had lost all her memory (I know!..crazy story) and the acupuncture was working on her regaining her memory back. I remember sitting and observing the doctor inserting the needles and being in awe and amazement by the whole thing!  I found myself reading up on acupuncture and other systems of natural medicine in my free time and being fascinated with how it works & how it’s still going strong helping so many people after thousands of years.

I actually owe my career to my mom. One day (out of the blue) she suggested I look into becoming a practitioner myself…and the light bulb went off!

Well, the rest is history..I have never looked back and the awe and amazement of this powerful medicine continues every day.

(In case you’re curious, my mom did end up regaining her memory after a tumultuous year!  – I keep telling her she should write a book about it, seriously!)

Fertility, Pregnancy & Women’s Health Focus

Chinese medicine can literally treat everything under the sun!….so why did I choose the area of women’s health as my specialty?

I actually didn’t start out with this particular focus. I was a general practitioner before. I was naturally inclined towards women’s health after several years of  practice. I saw more and more women get relief from hormonal issues without the use of drugs and the incredible difference Chinese medicine makes in fertility and pregnancy.

When I had my first child, I decided that I wanted to reach more women and started to specialize. Becoming a mother myself was truly life-changing. That’s why I’m on a mission to help couples who are struggling to conceive to grow their families and experience the awe, joy and profound gratitude that comes with becoming a parent.

Having gone through two (eventful) pregnancies, I feel I have first-hand experience and much support to offer expectant mothers throughout their pregnancies, births & postpartum time.

Some other things about me…

As I’m an avid learner, I’m consistently reading and expanding my knowledge and expertise, listening to podcasts, and taking continuing education courses in my field.

I used to own a fast paced clinic in the heart of Kitsilano (Vancouver). When I had my kids (pretty much back to back..they are only one grade apart), I made the difficult decision of shutting the clinic down so that I could be home with my kids for their first few years of life. Almost immediately after that, we decided to move out of our tiny downtown apartment to a house in North Vancouver. There I saw the great opportunity of devoting the lower floor of our house to a clinic and that’s where I’m now treating my patients. I’m deeply grateful for the setup I have to be able to do what I love and to be able to do it from the comfort of my home!

When I’m not seeing patients, I try to contribute to the community by teaching moral virtues classes to five to seven year olds.

The rest of my time is spent trying to keep up with my seven year old daughter and six year old son, cooking yummy food and enjoying the beauty of our neighborhood.

My clinical practice, my family, and my spiritual identity, being a member of The Baha’i Faith, keeps my life purposeful and inspired.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been helping millions of people for thousands of years! I believe it can help you too and I’m excited to share this medicine with you.

With warmth, kindness and compassion,

Dr. Maryam

Please Note: I am no longer at my Kitsilano Vancouver clinic. Since returning from maternity leave, I have opened my private home clinic in the Dollarton-Deep Cove area of North Vancouver, BC. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
